Who is David Charlip?

When will they re-open the cemetery?     

We do not know the answer to that question; but we encourage you to call the Cook County Sheriff's office at 1-800-942-1950 (the investigative hotline).

Is the cemetery open?

No. Attorneys for Burr Oak Plaintiffs have been permitted to visit the cemetery on behalf of their clients recently; but NO Loved Ones have yet been permitted on cemetery grounds. Mr. Charlip is aware of this and is in touch with cemetery officials. He is coordinating with them for his trip on October 22 when he will be in Chicago for the Perpetua Holdings bankruptcy hearing.

Is the cemetery a crime scene?

Yes. This is a criminal investigation.

What type of law suit is this?

A federal class action.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office regularly updates Burr Oak loved ones. You can find that information here as well. They often post videos and other information their website.

Who is in charge of Burr Oak cemetery?

On July 16th, the Circuit Court of Cook County appointed Roman Szabelski as the official "Receiver" of Burr Oak. He will serve as the temporary day-to-day operations chief of the cemetery. Mr. Szabelski has worked in the cemetery business for 40 years and is currently the executive director of Catholic Cemeteries in Chicago.

My deceased family members are buried at Burr Oak but I'm not sure exactly where the grave is located in the cemetery. When will I receive this information so I can search for the grave site when the cemetery re-opens?

Due to the massive amount of requests, the poor condition of the cemetery records, and the fact that most graves at Burr Oak are unmarked, it may be weeks before family members have this information. The computerization of cemetery records will help the new management team attempt to provide these answers in the near future.

I am missing information regarding a deceased family member, where can I get additional information?

The Cook County Clerk's Office's Bureau of Vital Statistics maintains death records and will provide a copy upon request to relatives. Please visit their website www.cookctyclerk.com or call 312-603-5656 for additional information. You can also check with the funeral home that conducted the services for your deceased family members. It is not necessary for you to have all your records in order for you to send back your contract and sign-up documents. To discuss this call 1-800-773-1955.

Who is investigating this crime?

The state of Illinois has a task force set up to investigate the tragedy at Burr Oak Cemetery.

The latest information on this task force is that they want the owners of the cemetery to testify before them in hopes that they will obtain useful information for their investigation.

Investigations into the Burr Oak Cemetery scandal are continuing.

The Illinois Department of Professional Regulation is compiling funeral home information on the cemetery. Most information from funeral directors was in On August 6th 2009.  Some extensions however were granted.

In the Burr Oak Cemetery Scandal over 300 graves were desecrated and there were over 50,000 complaints from families.
